Stroke Play Qualifying Complete: European Team Championships Day 2

Day two of the 2026 European Team Championships is now complete, and with it, so is the stroke play phase of the competitions.

Eight teams in each European-titled event have qualified for the Flight A medal-contention matchplay bracket, and will go head-to-head in match play over the next three days.

Highlights of the day included:

• France, England, Italy qualify for quarterfinals in all four European-titled categories
• Spain topped the stroke play qualifying in both junior categories (boys and girls), including on home soil at Barceló Montecastillo Golf
• Finland were surprise, but convincing, leaders in the men’s team event
• Hosts at the Ladies’, Ireland, to face defending champions Spain on Thursday

The remaining teams will battle for final position in the coming days in Flights B and C.

Amateur Team – Estonia

Finland head into the knockout stage of the European Amateur Team Championship as clear leaders after two wet and windy days of stroke play at Estonian Golf & Country Club.

The Finns took a one-shot lead after day one and pulled clear on day two, finishing 36 holes seven shots ahead of the Netherlands to secure the number one seed. France sit close behind in third.

Defending champions Italy claimed the final Flight A spot on the last hole, edging out Sweden by a single shot to book a quarter-final against Finland. The Netherlands will face host nation Estonia, France meet sixth seed Switzerland, and an all British Isles tie sees Ireland take on England.

Thursday’s quarter-finals will be played in a reduced one-foursome, four-singles format with heavy rain forecast overnight. The eight teams who missed out on Flight A move into Flight B, where three days of match play await as they look to avoid relegation.

Conditions eased on day two, with the course playing softer and the rain easing to turn scoring conditions favourable. Dutchman and recent European Amateur Championship runner-up, Nevill Ruiter posted the best 36 hole total on nine under for the tournament to top the individual standings. Sweden’s Wilhelm Ryding carded the best round of the tournament, a seven-under 65, to sit tied second.

Ladies’ Team – Ireland

rance secured top spot in the Stroke Play stage of the European Ladies’ Team Championship at a sunny PGA National Slieve Russell on Wednesday, finishing at nine under par combined ahead of Thursday’s Match Play rounds.

Vairana Heck was the standout performer for France, carding a four under par round of 68 in Round 2, including an eagle at the par five ninth, to finish at six under for the stroke play qualifying.

Defending champions Spain took third place after a strong second round from Balma Davalos Guaita (-5), Paula Martin Sampedro (-3) and Paula Francisco Liano (+2), setting up a Flight A tie against Ireland on Thursday.

Ireland finished sixth on a +12 total, with Kate Dillon (Oughterard) leading the team’s scoring on six under par after rounds of 68 and 70. Irish captain Gillian O’Leary said the team had stuck to their game plan across a difficult, windy second day.

“We’re absolutely delighted,” said O’Leary. “We said at the start of the week that we just take it one day at a time, one shot at a time and see where we finish at the end of it. It’s anybody’s game and we’re ready for anybody. Bring it on.”

Only 16 players carded sub-par rounds on the day, reflecting the difficulty of the conditions at Slieve Russell. They didn’t seem to hinder Denmark’s Marie Eline Madsen however, as she finished the two rounds with a total of -8 to earn individual honours at the event for the second consecutive year. She led Denmark into fourth place, setting up a tie with England in the quarterfinals.
